Mardi gras or Fat Tuesday is the last day of Carnival season which always falls on the day before Ash Wednesday.

Mardi gras was initially a pagan traditions in ancient Rome of Saturnalia and Lupercalia.

After Europe became christianized, the traditions were incorporated in the church and the Catholic colonies embraced the festival. In 1875 the festival became a legal holiday.
