The Legend...Valentine

                                    

Saint Valentine the patron Saint of Lovers was a Roman priest who was persecuted by the Roman Emperor  Claudius.
He was imprisoned for performing weddings for soldiers who were forbidden to marry and
ministering to Christians.
During his incarceration St. Valentine healed the daughter of his jailer Asterius.
Before his execution he wrote her a farewell letter signed  "Your Valentine."

Mardi gras or Fat Tuesday is the last day of Carnival season which always falls on the day before Ash Wednesday.

Mardi gras was initially a pagan traditions in ancient Rome of Saturnalia and Lupercalia.

After Europe became christianized, the traditions were incorporated in the church and the Catholic colonies embraced the festival. In 1875 the festival became a legal holiday.
